European Committee of the Regions launches working group on European Green Deal

The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) launched a new working group on the European Green Deal on Monday 15 June, with the aim of putting cities and regions at the heart of the Deal and ensuring that the EU’s growth strategy and the post-Covid-19 recovery plan are translated into concrete projects tailored to each territory.

Entitled ‘Green Deal Going Local’, this working group has three specific objectives: (1) provide a cross-cutting view of the many policy areas of the European Green Deal and ensure policy coherence and consistency in the dossiers and opinions that they submit; (2) strengthen the CoR’s institutional focus on the Green Deal in order to put cities and regions at the heart of the road to climate neutrality ; (3) channel the challenges faced by local and regional authorities in implementing the green transition at local level and communicate their achievements and best practices for replication throughout the EU.

The working group, made up of the thirteen local and regional elected representatives, will meet regularly and provide input to the CoR’s plenary sessions. A first debate on the role of regions and cities in a green recovery with the MEP and Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), Pascal Canfin, is thus scheduled for the next plenary on 1st and 2 July.
