Phil Hogan announces “stronger” safeguard measures for steel

28/05/2020 (Agence Europe)In a meeting by videoconference with the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA) on Thursday 28 May, EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan announced to MEPs concerned about the state of health of the steel industry that he had notified the WTO and Member States on the same day of the changes he intended to make to the safeguard measures regarding steel (see EUROPE 12426/16). The text of the draft implementing regulation was also shared with MEPs. The Commissioner promised “stronger” measures to “continue to defend European industry effectively against the effects of trade diversion”. These measures will be implemented by 1 July at the latest, he promised MEPs. “You will see, and I hope you will agree, that this is a decisive package that will meet our common objective of protecting this important sector”, he concluded. (HD)
