European Parliament refuses to allow London to continue to have access to Member States' fingerprint databases

14/05/2020 (Agence Europe)On the evening of Wednesday 13 May, the European Parliament confirmed the decision made by its Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) not to authorise the exchange of fingerprint data with the United Kingdom (see EUROPE 12483/18). MEPs decided, by 357 votes to 359, with four abstentions, that the UK had not provided sufficient data protection guarantees to continue to have access to this type of data under the Prüm Convention during the transitional period and until data exchange arrangements are determined as part of the future partnership between the two parties, which is currently being negotiated. The vote is not binding and the Council of the EU, which will make the decision, may disregard it. The Council of the EU’s decision will deal with access during the transition period. It will not involve the future relationship. (SP)
