14/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – On 13 May, 54 MEPs from five political groups (EPP, S&D, Renew Europe, Greens/EFA and GUE/NGL) and non-attached MEPs from 16 Member States called on the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs to increase the support provided by the Union and Member States for the Lebanese people and the stability of their country. In a letter, the MEPs warned that “Lebanon now seems to be on the verge of exploding”, and stated that the country and its institutions were at an impasse. They asked the High Representative what specifically he planned to do to help Lebanon, “one of our most important allies in the region”, to tackle both Covid-19 “and, in particular, the economic and financial crisis, widespread corruption and the deterioration of political and human rights”.
