In the interest of the unity of Ethiopia and the stability of the whole Horn of Africa, the EU calls on all Ethiopian political parties to engage in political dialogue at all levels, prior to the general elections for which it intends to deploy an observation mission.
“The EU took note of the swift decision of the House of People’s Representatives to ask for constitutional interpretation on the postponement of the elections. The EU encourages and supports inclusive and comprehensive dialogue between all political parties at federal and regional levels in order to organise next general elections in a coordinated way”, the spokesperson of the European External Action Service (EEAS) stated in response to the press on Friday 8 May.
It was invited to react to the intention of the Tigray’s People Liberation Front (TPLF) to maintain the elections in the region, despite their postponement decided at the federal level.
The spokesperson said that when observing the elections, the EU would pay “special attention to the conditions of its organisation, throughout the electoral process”.
With regard to the TPLF statement, of which the EU also took note, the spokesperson assured: the “delegation of the EU in Addis Ababa [...] is seeking clarifications on this declaration". (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
