23/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 23 April, the European Commission announced that the European Union is working to provide satellite maps to Poland after the Member State—faced with a devastating fire in the Biebrza National Park (Podlaskie Voivodeship, in the north-east of the country)—activated the EU's Copernicus programme. The satellite mapping service will enable Polish intervention teams to monitor the progress of the fires and will provide them with a detailed view of the location and extent of the damage. The Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre, which is the pivotal body of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, is active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is closely monitoring the situation. “We stand ready to assist further”, said the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič.
