09/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – The Commission considered that it was “not within its competence to indicate landing places” of migrant vessels and therefore could not provide a legal analysis of the situations encountered. The institution was reacting to the Italian government’s 8 April announcement to close its ports to NGO ships because of COVID-19 and emergency health measures in the country. A decision that resulted in preventing the disembarkation of a boat belonging to the NGO See Eye with 150 people on board. Recognising Italy’s “exceptional” situation with regard to the coronavirus, the Commission encourages Member States to “work together in a spirit of solidarity to find solutions for the people on board. The Commission is ready to offer its support, if necessary”. The NGOs criticise this decision as a pretext for refusing migrants. (SP)
