20/03/2020 (Agence Europe) – Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton spoke to Google's Sundar Pichai and YouTube's Susan Wojcicki, on Thursday 19 March, on how to avoid congestion on the internet. In particular, the decision by the two US companies to temporarily set "standard" definition viewing for European traffic as the default instead of high definition was discussed. The aim is to reduce the amount of data flows and to preserve the proper functioning of the network, which is a growing concern within the European Commission. The day before, the Commissioner had met with the CEO of Netflix to develop the same approach (see EUROPE 12450/14). (PH)
