27/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – A group of experts from EU governments agreed that reintroducing controls at the EU’s internal borders to stop the Covid-19 outbreak would be counterproductive, a European source confirmed on Thursday (27 February), but said this position should be reviewed weekly. She believes that it is better to quarantine individuals who show suspicious symptoms. Moreover, according to the Schengen Borders Code, health grounds can only come into play at the external borders of the EU and can therefore only be invoked to limit access to the Schengen area. However, if Member States wished to reintroduce checks at their borders for this reason, they would have to notify the Commission. “It will not be able to oppose it, but neither does it encourage Member States to do so”, the same European source added.
