Brussels, 27/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Thursday 27 February that it has released an additional €10 million in aid to help combat the massive locust invasion in East Africa that could have a devastating impact on food security in the region. This is in addition to the contribution of 1 million euros mobilised through humanitarian funds (see EUROPE 12428/16). “The EU will then launch a common approach combining humanitarian aid and development to tackle the crisis and protect livelihoods”, the Commission said in a statement. The institution fears that the situation will deteriorate further in March with the rainy season, which will lead to a new wave of reproduction of the species and facilitate its spread in the region.
