European Parliament Committee on Transport in favour of maintaining vehicle emission conformity factors

The European Parliament's Committee on Transport (TRAN) gave its backing, on Wednesday 19 February, to maintaining the conformity factors for car manufacturers.

It adopted by a large majority (38 votes in favour and 7 against) the opinion of the rapporteur, Sven Schulze (EPP, Germany), on the European Commission's legislative proposal (see EUROPE 12275/15) to lay down rules on motor vehicle emissions (Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards).

This vote in favour of the factors of 2.1 for new car models up to 2020 and 1.43 after 2020 was very much to the displeasure of the Greens/EFA Group, the only one to have opposed maintaining the conformity factors.

TRAN Committee Chair Karima Delli (Greens/EFA, France), had proposed a series of amendments, calling in particular for the introduction of stricter emission standards. All were rejected.

This legislative procedure will continue in a month's time, with the vote in the Committee on the Environment. (Original version in French by Agathe Cherki – intern)
