17/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission confirmed on Monday, 17 February, that it has received a request from the Greek government asking for help from its European partners to repatriate Afghan asylum seekers currently in the Aegean islands, as reported by AFP. According to the Greek government, the vast majority (75%) of asylum seekers living in camps on the five Aegean islands are Afghans, followed by Syrians. "We have asked the EU to help pave the way for the return (of migrants) to their countries of origin, such as in Pakistan and Afghanistan", said Minister Notis Mitarachi. Athens has sent a letter to this effect to the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson. (SP)
