The European Home Fuel Oil Association, Eurofuel, presented on Tuesday 28 January, a strategy through which it believes that heating with liquid fuels could play a role in the energy transition and thus contribute to achieving the European Union's climate objectives.
Formulated with three other European associations active in the heating oil and liquid heating fuel sector, namely ECFD (European Confederation of Fuel Distributors), FuelsEurope (a division of the European Petroleum Refiners Association) and UPEI (the independent fuel suppliers in Europe), this strategy is structured in three steps.
The group of four organisations recommends that : (1) maximise boiler efficiency by installing modern oil-fired condensing boilers in all buildings; (2) switch to hybrid heating systems that rely on both renewables and oil to take advantage of the different strengths of these sources of energy ; (3) deploy new carbon-neutral liquid fuels.
The four organisations also call on the EU to “fix targets while remaining neutral on the technological plan”, i.e. not banning certain fuels, but allowing others, which are more environmentally friendly.
