28/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – Alarmed by recent scientific studies demonstrating the dangers to biodiversity and human health of SDHI fungicides, MEP Eric Andrieu (S&D, France) announced on Monday 27 January that he had referred the matter to the Commission in the hope of obtaining an end to the use of these pesticides, as called for by many scientists. This family of pesticides used in agriculture and on sports fields works by blocking an enzyme involved in cell respiration, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). In a written question, Mr Andrieu asks: what is the Commission waiting for to urgently apply the precautionary principle at EU level; what it will do for boscalid, whose authorization expires on 31 July; what the Commission is “specifically proposing in order to limit the risk of a health disaster linked to the use of the whole group of SDHI fungicides in Europe”.
