10/12/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Green Deal must recognise the potential of gas to decarbonise the EU's energy mix, said Eurogas, an association representing the European gas sales and distribution sectors, in a statement issued on Tuesday 10 December. According to the Secretary General of this organisation, James Watson, gas “will play a major role” in the achievement of carbon neutrality by 2050. And he pointed out that: “Switching from coal to gas in power generation, replacing inefficient oil heaters with gas, using LNG [liquefied natural gas] in marine transport will significantly contribute to meeting the EU’s increased emissions reduction target by 2030”. Eurogas also recommends setting targets with respect to renewable and carbon-free gases - biogas, biomethane and hydrogen - in order to promote their deployment in Europe. (DG)
