10/12/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission will make proposals “in the second half of 2020” to reform the Stability and Growth Pact, which governs European fiscal rules, said Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni in an interview with the daily newspapers Le Monde and Süddeutsche Zietung last weekend. “These rules worked. As a result, no Member State now has a deficit higher than 3% of GDP. But if we take other criteria - debt reduction, the implementation of structural reforms, the use of fiscal surpluses where they exist - they have proved ineffective”, he added. And to note the need to “build a new framework” for better coordination of economic policies, at least within the euro area. (MB)
