02/12/2019 (Agence Europe) – The new European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen does not intend to go into the field of “new action” on the Rule of law targeting Malta, said spokesman Eric Mamer on Monday 2 December. He was responding to reports that the Maltese Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, will leave his post in January, following resignations and arrests in connection with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. The Commission believes that we must give the current investigation a “chance” and is following these developments “very closely”. Joseph Muscat, who is in a hurry to resign, despite the fact that his inner circle have been directly targeted in recent days by police operations in connection with the blogger's murder, announced on 30 November that he would leave office on 18 January when the new leader of the Labour Party is appointed.
