02/12/2019 (Agence Europe) – Around 50 parliamentarians, including 35 MEPs from different political groups and nationalities, called on 1st December in an open letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for the adoption of a European Magnitsky Act to punish those responsible for human rights violations worldwide. “We call upon you and Mr Borrell (High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy) to make the adoption and the introduction of an EU-wide Magnitsky act as one of your priorities for the first months of your commission's tenure”, they stressed in the letter. According to them, “it is of utmost importance that this Magnitsky Act is adopted and implemented as soon as possible”. The adoption of such a list requires the unanimity of the Member States. (CG)
