Twelve Member States have decided to join forces in a project to exchange ideas, launched on Wednesday 9 October, to improve road safety.
Specifically, this project, funded by the European Union and managed by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), will bring together transport experts from the participating countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Spain, France, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Sweden) to share best practices in speed reduction, safe infrastructure construction and better law enforcement, data collection and pedestrian and cyclist safety in urban areas.
Through these exchanges, the project aims to contribute to closing the road safety gap between Member States and, consequently, reducing the overall number of deaths and serious injuries on European roads. In 2018, there were more than 25 ,000 deaths in road accidents, a decrease of 21% from 2010, but only 1% from 2017.
"We have to work together to get to Vision Zero – zero deaths and injuries on our roads by 2050 - and this means twinning and exchange of best practices", said Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc.
The project will run until 2021. (Original version in French by Damien Genicot)
