The spokeswoman of the European External Action Service welcomed on Tuesday evening, 8 October, the holding of parliamentary elections in Tunisia on 6 October, although the turnout was only 41%.
No party won a majority of seats, 109 out of 217. The independents have reportedly won between 75 and 85 seats, the Islamic conservative party between 40 and 46.
“Tunisians voted [...] in a peaceful and orderly manner. While the turnout appears very low compared to the importance of the elections for the consolidation of democracy, Tunisians were able to freely exercise their political rights and vote without obstacles”, the spokesperson said in a statement.
In another statement, the EU Election Observation Mission in Tunisia described the elections as “well organised, with a decline in turnout after a campaign overshadowed by the presidential election”.
The EEAS spokesperson took the opportunity to recall the EU's privileged partnership with Tunisia and to reiterate the European commitment to accompany the Tunisian authorities in the reform process, which is essential to consolidate stability in the country.
