03/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, visited Turkey on 3 October with the German and French Interior Ministers, Horst Seehofer and Christophe Castaner, to review the migration situation with their Turkish counterparts, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu. Migrant arrivals in Greece via the Aegean Sea area increased sharply in August (9300 detected, almost three quarters of the total number of people arriving in Europe over this period, according to Frontex). According to UNHCR, 77400 irregular migrants arrived in Europe this year, including 45,600 in Greece. Mr Soylu reported on 2 October that this year Turkey had detained 315,000 people who had tried to travel to Greece. EUROPE will continue to follow this story. (SP)
