03/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Commissioner-designate for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, has received the support required from MEPs, at the end of her hearing, to realistically win the post. And this is not surprising (see EUROPE 12339/2): Tomas Tobé (EPP), Chairman of the Committee on Development, pointed out that her hearing had gone smoothly. With nothing but praise from the Renew Europe group, according to which she "fully met expectations", particularly in her "refusal to give in to the temptation" to make aid conditional upon migration policy, and also from the S&D group, for her commitment to sustainable development objectives and the fight against poverty. The EUL/NGL group would have abstained because there was no change in the current approach to development policy. The ID group would not have supported her. The formal decision of the Conference of Presidents is expected on 17 October. (AN)
