04/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – The former Italian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Social Democrat Paolo Gentiloni, was most often cited to sit on the future 'von der Leyen' Commission on Wednesday 4 September. At the time of going to press, this information had not yet been confirmed in Rome, where the formation of the 'Conte bis' government, supported by the Partito Democratico and Movimento 5 stelle (M5S), was being finalised. This new government, in which Luigi Di Maio would become Minister of Foreign Affairs and the current Chairman of the European Parliament's Economic Affairs Committee, Roberto Gualtieri, Minister of the Economy, is due to take the oath this Thursday. Italy is the last Member State not to have designated a political figure to sit on the future Commission. (MB)
