02/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – In solidarity with the Bahamas devastated by Hurricane Dorian, the European Union has activated the European Copernicus system to provide satellite maps of the affected areas, the European Commission said on Sunday 1 September. “The EU is preparing #satellite maps via @CopernicusEMS in order to assist with the assessment of the situation in the #Bahamas”, said Christos Stylianides, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, on his Twitter account on Sunday. On Monday, the category 5 hurricane, of unprecedented violence in this Caribbean archipelago, continued its destructive work with torrential rains and gusts of wind reaching 360 km/hour. Satellite maps provide a very accurate view of the location and extent of damage in the event of a disaster. (AN)
