02/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Brussels on 2 and 3 September. Meetings with the Belgian Prime Minister and future President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, the President-elect of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell - who should be the next High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy - are planned. The objective is to discuss “transatlantic cooperation to advance our common global priorities”, according to a statement by the State Department. While Mr Pompeo is expected to meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, no meetings are planned with High Representative Federica Mogherini. When asked about this absence, the EEAS said that Mr Pompeo was in town to meet the “EU leadership team for the next term”. (CG)
