Ms Mogherini calls for appeasement in Kashmir

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, called on Friday evening, 30 August, for the easing of tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.

In early August, India revoked the autonomy of the part of Kashmir under its control, imposed a curfew and blocked communications.

In a meeting with the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in Brussels, Ms Mogherini “reiterated the call to avoid an escalation of tensions and stressed the importance of steps to restore the rights and freedoms of the population in Kashmir”, according to a statement from the European External Action Service.

The High Representative also reaffirmed the EU's support for a peaceful solution to the crisis through bilateral dialogue between India and Pakistan. For his part, Mr Jaishankar informed Ms Mogherini about the progress of the work and the security situation

In addition, the High Representative and the Indian Minister reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen EU-India bilateral relations and to advance the strategic partnership in concrete areas of cooperation. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
