02/09/2019 (Agence Europe) – On 30 August, in Helsinki, European Defence Ministers held, for the first time ever, a climate discussion, reviewing “... the different connections, direct and indirect links between climate change and defence and security issues”, said EU High Representative Federica Mogherini. Two questions were addressed: - how to ensure that the military contribute to address climate change issues, “in particular reducing the energy dependency and its carbon foot print and in this way contributing to addressing climate change effects, and that can also be useful in terms of effectiveness and efficiency of operations on the ground”; - the effect of climate change on conflicts or crisis areas, “that can affect the way in which militaries could be deployed in these theatres of operations”.
