21/08/2019 (Agence Europe) – At the end of July, MEP Eva Kaili (S&D, Greece) sent a written question to the ECB asking it to take a position on the creation of a crypto-Euro. “Many major central banks have adopted a defensive attitude towards cryptocurrencies, refusing to acknowledge the changing nature of money”, she wrote, referring to the outcry caused by Facebook’s Libra (see EUROPE 12299/11). In doing so, Ms Kaili asked the monetary institute if it was willing to reconsider its defensive attitude towards cryptocurrencies and to adopt “a more technologically relevant understanding of money and liquidity”. In another written question, tabled at the end of June, Markus Ferber (EPP) of Germany expressed concern about the implications of Libra for financial stability and asked the ECB what form an appropriate regulatory framework could take. The ECB has a total of six weeks to reply to these questions. (MF)
