The European Commission announced on 13 August that it had opened an anti-dumping investigation into imports of hot-rolled stainless steel sheets and coils from China, Indonesia and Taiwan.
The investigation follows a complaint lodged by the European Steel Association (EUROFER) that imports from these countries are being dumped and are thus causing injury to European producers.
The complainants request that the dumping margin be calculated in accordance with the EU's new anti-dumping methodology, i.e. taking into account market distortions and distorted raw material prices in China and Indonesia.
“It is apparent from the evidence provided by the complainant that the volume and prices of the imported product under investigation have had a negative impact on the quantities sold by the industry in the Union”, explains the Commission. The Commission has eight months to collect evidence and decide whether provisional measures should be introduced.
This new investigation is part of the Commission's wider action to protect EU producers against unfair competition from dumped and subsidised products.
To date, 52 steel products have been subject to trade defence measures.
