21/08/2019 (Agence Europe) – An additional €50 million in humanitarian aid was mobilised by the European Commission on 7 August to help people affected by drought in the Horn of Africa. The prolonged drought in this region is having a devastating impact on the food supply and livelihoods of many people who depend on livestock and subsistence agriculture. Of these funds, €25 million is earmarked for Somalia, €20 million for Ethiopia, €3 million for Kenya and €2 million for Uganda. This new allocation, funded by ECHO's (the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department) budget, will be "helping communities ward off the risk of famine", according to Commissioner Christos Stylianides. It brings to €366.5 million the humanitarian aid mobilised by the EU for the Horn of Africa since 2018. (AN)
