EEB concerned about poor environmental profiles of Commissioners appointed by Member States

01/08/2019 (Agence Europe)In a statement issued on Thursday 1 August, the European Environment Bureau (EEB) expressed concern about the profiles of Commissioners so far appointed by Member States for the incoming European Commission of President-elect Ursula von der Leyen (21 in total, according to the organisation's figures). The environmental organisation is concerned that “there is a danger that the College of 27 European Commissioners - who are nominated by national governments - will fail to reflect the wishes of millions of voters who turned out in the European elections”. It notes that “very few of these potential new Commissioners have any noteworthy green credentials”. The EEB believes that Mrs von der Leyen must insist on the Member States guaranteeing a College of Commissioners capable of meeting its environmental commitments (see EUROPE 12298/17). (PH)
