Commission adopts rules to assist future Commissioners to take office

On Wednesday 3 July, the European Commission adopted rules to ensure a smooth transition from the current members of the College of Commissioners to the next ones.

These rules are addressed to the President-elect and the Commissioners-designate for the months preceding their appointment to the new Commission.

They take into account the fact that Commissioners-designate are required to spend considerable time in Brussels, Luxembourg and/or Strasbourg to prepare to formally assume their duties.

More specifically, following his or her nomination, the President-elect will in principle be entitled to an office on the Commission's premises, the necessary computer equipment and a limited number of staff to assist him or her in their work. The same shall apply to Commissioners-designate from the moment the President-elect announces his or her acceptance of them as candidates to be members of the Commission.

The President-elect and Commissioners-designate will also be able to count on the support of the Commission services, including the Commission's representations in the EU Member States, for their possible travel.
