15/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission proposed on Wednesday 15 May to release an additional €100 million for the Horizon 2020 research and Erasmus+ youth mobility programmes, in accordance with the Interinstitutional Agreement on the EU 2019 budget (see EUROPE 12158/12). Of this €100 million, €80 million will go to climate-related research under the Horizon 2020 programme, which aims to devote 35% of its budget to research in this field. The remaining €20 million, allocated to the Erasmus+ programme, will contribute to the creation of European universities, a flagship initiative for the creation of the European Education Area by 2025. By 2021, the EU wants to establish 12 European universities that will enable students to obtain a degree by combining studies in several EU countries. The European Parliament and the Council of the EU have yet to approve the additional funds. (MB)
