07/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – The spokeswoman of the European External Action Service regretted on Tuesday 7 May, the death, on 4 May, of Alia Abdulnour, a 39-year-old UAE national sentenced for terrorism and suffering from breast cancer, who died while in detention. In a statement, the spokeswoman recalled that the EU had requested clarification on the charges against Ms Abdulnour and on allegations of degrading treatment and torture during detention, which had “not received a satisfactory response”. “The absolute and irrevocable prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment [is] codified in the specific UN convention to which the United Arab Emirates is a party”, she added, adding that the UN had required that the UAE treat all persons in detention or imprisonment in a humane manner and with respect for the inherent dignity of the human being.
