09/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU will increase its humanitarian aid by €12 million for victims of tropical cyclone Idai and floods in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, the Commission announced on Tuesday 9 April. This sum will finance shelter, food and access to safe drinking water and sanitation for the most vulnerable. “There are still urgent humanitarian needs to be met”, says European Commissioner Christos Stylianides in a statement. Seven million euros will go to Mozambique, the most affected country, with about 1.85 million people in urgent need of assistance. Four million euros are for Zimbabwe and one million for Malawi (food aid and livelihood support for this very poor country). This gesture of solidarity with these partner countries brings to €15 million the humanitarian aid provided by the EU in response to this disaster (see EUROPE 12220/22). (AN)
