European Parliament Committee on Budgetary Control rejects nomination of Romanian candidate Viorel Ştefan

The European Parliament's Committee on Budgetary Control decided, on Monday, 8 April in Brussels, to give an unfavourable opinion on the EU Council's proposal to appoint Viorel Ştefan as a Romanian Member of the EU Court of Auditors.

The Romanian candidate received the support of eight deputies, while 12 rejected his nomination. During the hearing of Viorel Ştefan, several MEPs questioned his role in the country's poor record in tackling corruption.

Croatian nomination endorsed. At the same time, the Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control endorsed (11 votes in favour, 8 against and 2 abstentions) the nomination of the Croatian candidate, Ivana Maletić, to the EU Court of Auditors. Ms Maletić, who belongs to the EPP Group, is a member of the Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. Before joining the European Parliament in 2013, she held various offices in the Croatian public administration.

The European Parliament will vote in plenary next week on the two candidates.

The EU Council, after consulting the European Parliament, decides on the candidate presented by each country. If the opinion adopted by the Parliament on an individual nomination is unfavourable, the President of the Parliament asks the EU Council to withdraw the nomination and to submit a new one to the Parliament. However, the EU Council can also proceed with the appointment of candidates rejected by the Parliament. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
