On Tuesday 9 April, Transparency International (TI) announced the support of seven European political parties for its matters of priority.
Fourteen Spitzenkandidaten from the European People's Party (EPP), the Party of European Socialists (PES), the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the European Green Party (EGP), the European Left (EL), the European Free Alliance (EFA) and DiEM25/Printemps européen have therefore committed themselves to supporting Transparency International's matters of priority in respect of renewed political integrity.
TI had asked them to commit to enforcing legislation and supporting legislative transparency, preventing corrupt individuals and their illegal money from entering the EU, and supporting the creation of an independent ethics monitoring body to oversee conflicts of interest and the transparency of lobbyists.
Transparency International also called on candidates in the European elections to be transparent and ethical in their parliamentary activities and to 'go green' by not lobbying on behalf of lobbies upon leaving the European Parliament.
The candidates who have given their support to the commitment are: Manfred Weber (EPP), Frans Timmermans (PES), Margrethe Vestager, Violeta Bulc, Guy Verhofstadt, Emma Bonino, Nicola Beer, Katalin Cseh and Luis Garicano (ALDE), Ska Keller and Bas Eickhout (EGP), Violeta Tomič (EL), Oriol Junqueras (EFA) and Yanis Varoufakis (DiEM25/European Spring).
