04/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – On the evening of Wednesday 3 April, by just one vote (313 in favour, 312 against), the British Parliament approved the bill to avoid a no-deal Brexit, as of Friday, 12 April. British Prime Minister Theresa May is therefore theoretically obliged to reject a ‘no deal’ scenario beyond that. On Tuesday 2 April, she had asked the European Union to grant her an extension of the exit deadlines until 22 May, in order to reach an agreement on future relations between the United Kingdom and the EU with Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party, perhaps through the establishment of a permanent customs union (see EUROPE 12228/1). For European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, a favourable vote in the House of Commons is required before 12 April, in order for the EU to grant the British this short extension. (SP)
