Violeta Bulc, Commissioner for Transport Policy, presented to the press on Thursday 4 April the various measures that the European Union could implement in the event of a no-deal Brexit in order to counter some of the negative consequences of such a scenario in different transport areas.
"At this stage, it is increasingly likely that the United Kingdom will leave the European Union without a deal on 12 April", Bulc first said ahead of the statement of the various measures. Before adding that "the contingency measures will not – and cannot – mitigate the overall impact of a no-deal scenario".
These measures, which have been the subject of legislative work and interinstitutional agreements within a very short period of time, concern air safety and connectivity (see EUROPE 12200/19, EUROPE 12198/7), road transport (see EUROPE 12202/6), rail transport (see EUROPE 12220/23) and maritime transport (see EUROPE 12191/26, 12177/38).
For example, connectivity between the United Kingdom and the European Union should be available for some time if the British were to leave the EU on 12 April without agreement. As Mrs Bulc pointed out, the implementation of these measures is subject to reciprocal behaviour on the part of London. (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau)
