Ricardo Hernández, new EU Force Commander of Operation Atalanta

11/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – Spanish Rear Admiral Ricardo A. Hernández has been appointed as the new EU Force Commander for the European Union Military Operation "with a view to contributing to the deterrence, prevention and repression of acts of piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast [Atalanta]", according to the Official Journal of the EU of 8 March. Mr Hernández took office on 10 March 2019, replacing his compatriot Alfonso Pérez de Nanclares y Pérez de Acevedo. The Force Commander (CFdr) exercises command and control of all military forces in the area of operation. The EU NAVFOR Atalanta mission is led by British Major General Charlie Stickland, who will be replaced from 29 March by Spanish Vice-Admiral Antonio Martorell Lacave (see EUROPE 12073/5). (CG)
