On Monday 11 March, the European Commission published a study estimating that the European Union today is lacking 400,000 safe and secure parking areas.
This report is published on a specific date, while the issue of safe and secure parking areas is at the heart of discussions on the social and market aspects of the first mobility package, for which negotiations in the European Parliament are very problematic (see EUROPE 12209/10).
The study undertaken by the institution reveals, among other things, that standards for safe and secure parking vary widely and they recommend the creation of common standards and a common rating.
As part of the communications, the Commission notes that, in an attempt to solve some of the problems related to this need for safe and secure parking, eight actions over the period 2014-2017 have been financed through The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), with a total budget of €45 million.
In addition, it has set up a group of experts – including truck drivers, trade union representatives, representatives of car park operators and transporters – to work on the conclusions of this report.
