04/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU had been “right” to prepare for a “no-deal Brexit”, Martin Selmayr, Secretary General of the Commission, said on Monday 4 February on Twitter. He was reacting after receiving a delegation of British MPs from the House of Commons who had come to explore ways out of the impasse over Ireland. A meeting that was not “conclusive”, added Martin Selmayr. At the end of the meeting, these British MPs suggested that Mrs May might be able to get a green light from her Parliament for a divorce agreement if the EU accepts “legally binding” assurances to the current text, but “on the EU side, no one is considering” reopening the negotiation of the Withdrawal Treaty, Mr Selmayr assured. The Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, will be in Brussels on Wednesday 6 February to meet Mr Tusk and Mr Juncker. (SP)
