15/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 14 January, the ALDE group in the European Parliament denounced the murder of two members of the LGBT community in Chechnya (Russia) and the imprisonment of dozens of others. “Shame on the instigators and leaders in Russia who turn a blind eye to the situation”, the group emphasised on its Twitter account. “Tortured and murdered because of your sexual orientation: this is happening in 2019, right on the EU’s doorstep”, it added. According to activists, two people were killed, possibly under torture by the police, and about 30 others arrested following new crackdowns on the LGBT community. In 2017, hundreds of gay men were arrested and tortured by the police because of their sexual orientation (see EUROPE 11791). (CG)
