EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Egypt

European Parliament calls on Member States to make their cooperation conditional on respect for human rights

On Thursday 13 December, MEPs urged the EU and its Member States to "make further cooperation with Egypt conditional on respect for human rights and to incorporate human rights issues into all talks with the Egyptian authorities".

"Measures to manage migration or fight terrorism must not violate human rights", stresses the resolution of the Greens/EFA, ECR, EFDD, EUL/NGL, S&D, ALDE and EPP groups adopted in plenary, even though the EU wishes to develop its cooperation with Egypt in these areas in particular.

The European Parliament insists on an EU commitment based on the "more for more“ principle, which should be conditional on progress in the areas of reform of democratic institutions, the rule of law and human rights.

The resolution reiterates the repeated restrictions on fundamental democratic rights and calls for an end to violence perpetrated, in particular, by public authorities, security forces and services against human rights defenders, journalists, civil society organisations, political opponents, etc.

The European Parliament added that the EU should fully implement its export control regime on goods that could be used for torture or the death penalty and stop exports of surveillance technologies and security equipment that could facilitate attacks against human rights defenders and civil society activists. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
