The United Kingdom undertakes to conclude, by 1 July 2020 at the latest, a fisheries agreement with the Member States of the European Union as part of the future trade relations under negotiation. This is reflected in the latest draft declaration on the future economic and strategic relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom (see other news).
"The parties will make every effort to conclude and ratify their new fisheries agreement before 1 July 2020 to ensure that it is in place in time to determine fishing opportunities for the first year after the transition period," the draft statement states.
Within the framework of the global economic partnership, the Parties undertake to establish a new fisheries agreement covering access to waters and the allocation of fishing quotas.
The parties also undertake to cooperate bilaterally and internationally to ensure sustainable fishing, promote conservation of resources and achieve a clean, healthy and productive marine environment, ‘noting that the United Kingdom will be an independent coastal State,’ the project confirms. Finally, the EU and the United Kingdom undertake to cooperate in the development of conservation and regulatory measures for fisheries, ‘in a non-discriminatory manner’.
