21/11/2018 (Agence Europe) – On 10 December in Marrakesh, Belgium will sign the United Nations Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, despite opposition from the main government party, the NVA, Prime Minister Charles Michel said, quoted by the Belgian media on Tuesday 20 November. The EU still does not have a common position (see EUROPE 12138). The High Representative of the EU, Federica Mogherini, nevertheless recalled on 19 November that the Commission's position remained unchanged ‘for one simple reason’: this Pact “ is the result, actually, of a demand that the European Union and its Member States raised in the very first place, namely that of having a global approach to migration, a shared one.” According to her, it “reflects largely - if not totally - the European Union's requests and positions and approaches.” And it "will be beneficial first and foremost for our work on migration, so full support to it."
