At the JHA Council meeting on 6 and 7 December, the EU Council is expected to adopt a declaration on “the fight against anti-Semitism and the development of a common approach in relation to security, to better protect Jewish communities and institutions in Europe”.
According to a draft text dated 29 October, which EUROPE has seen, the Council is expected to call on Member States to increase their efforts to ensure the safety of Jewish communities within their territory.
The text notes with deep concern that “persistent anti-Semitism is not a curse of the past but an immediate and growing threat in Europe today”.
It invites Member States to adopt and implement a comprehensive strategy to prevent and combat all forms of anti-Semitism as part of their strategies for the prevention of racism, xenophobia, radicalisation and violent extremism.
The text also calls on the Commission to give particular attention to anti-Semitic hate speech in the context of its code of conduct on countering online hate speech.
At the end of the draft declaration, the Council undertakes to examine appropriate options on how to improve Member States' policies and the coordination of the Council's work on preventing and combating anti-Semitism. (Original version in French by Marion Fontana)
