06/11/2018 (Agence Europe) – The EU has identified shortcomings in Brazil's system for controls on residues and contaminants in live animals and animal products eligible for export to the European Union, according to a report by the EU Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) published on Monday 5 November. Residue monitoring follows principles of the Codex Alimentarius and Directive 96/23/EC (control measures with regard to certain substances and residues thereof in live animals and animal products), but the experts found samples for aquaculture and honey not meeting the Codex approach. In addition, certain substances authorised in bovine animals in Brazil cannot be used in food-producing animals in the EU and which preclude certification requirements being met at present. (LC)
