18/10/2018 (Agence Europe) – The Fidesz Party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán supports the candidacy of Manfred Weber, the EPP Group Chairman in the European Parliament, in the campaign leading to the nomination of the European People's Party's leading candidate for the May 2019 European elections, Antal Rogán, Minister President of Mr Orbán's cabinet, told the Hungarian MTI agency on Thursday 18 October. "If Mr. Orbán has to choose between the two candidates, he will certainly choose the Bavarian leader who belongs to the Christian Democratic wing of the EPP, rather than Mr. Stubb who belongs to the Liberal wing of the EPP", he said (see EUROPE 12119). EPP party delegates will nominate their Spitzenkandidat from among the two sole candidates on November 8 at the Helsinki Congress. If the Christian Democrats win the European elections, he will be eligible for the presidency of the European Commission. (MB)
