World Food Day - Neven Mimica sounds rallying cry to eradicate hunger by 2030

16/10/2018 (Agence Europe)From Rome (the seat of the FAO), on the occasion of World Food Day on 16 October, European Development Commissioner Neven Mimica urged the EU and all international partners to ramp up their effort to reach the UN goal of eradicating hunger by 2030.  “If we do not act now, much of the progress made at a high price will be lost.  If we do not act now, we shall never reach our goal”, he warned, expressing alarm at the latest figures on food supply insecurity, malnutrition and the risk of famine on the rise again in many countries.  In a press release, his colleague, Vytenis Adriukaitis, pointed out that, in Europe, 88 million tonnes of food worth €143 billion are wasted each year – this being “unacceptable in a world where 800 million people suffer from hunger”.
